While learning guitar, the first person that struck me with a sound was Leslie West of the band Mountain. Just his tone, and the way he held a note, vocal like..just floored me I was hooked, I was 11 years old.
I have a cousin who would come down, he lived on the 18th floor (yes, I'm from the projects; Wykcoff Gardens Brooklyn, NY - side note, I had the best child hood, more on this later) with his records and such and played me blues records from the three Kings, Albert, BB, and Freddie and Robert Cray. They were great, but their sound just wasn't touching me..
I was more into the heavier side of blues guitar, Hendrix, Robin Trower, and Leslie West. The first rock show I went was at Shea Stadium, on the bill was Jethro Tull, Robin Trower, and Rory Gallagher, (Loved Rory, he was running all over the stage with a boogie rock sound, floor me!.
